CHASSELL — Down 11-3 to Superior Service and headed into the sixth inning, Moyle/Finnish Coat had their work cut out on the fastpitch softball field on Wednesday. They got to work and scored six in the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh for a 12-11 win over Superior Service.

Moyle/Finnish Coat player-coach Brynn Arko summed it up best.

“We started strong and had one bad inning (allowing 10 runs),” she said, “but then we came back, and everyone’s bats lit up. I am very proud of the girls.”

The game opened with a 1-1 knot after one. Then Moyle/Finnish Coat took a 3-1 lead after two. Scoring that frame were Ryeleigh Johnson, who slapped a triple to left, and Katelyn Nielsen who reached on a single.

It was a short-lived lead though as Superior Service went through the lineup and posted 10 runs in the top of the third. It started with a base hit by McKenzie Ekdahl. Pitcher Josie Heinonen followed with a base rap as did Molly Bugni, Lilah Hill, and Dela Jeffery.

All 10 runs scored with just one out. A fly out by Heinonen ended the team’s double-digit inning.

With Heinonen in the circle for Superior Service, and her teammates making the plays in the field, it looked like a safe lead for the ladies in yellow as they blanked Moyle/Finnish Coat in the fourth and the fifth innings.

Then came the sixth, when Moyle/Finnish had their big inning with six runs.

Swinging a hot bat that inning were pitcher Claire Mettlach, Arko, and Ryeleigh Johnson who led off with singles and scored. The mother-daughter duo Alana and AnnaMae Nolan both had doubles that led to runs. It was now a 11-9 game with one out to go.

Mettlach held Superior Service scoreless in the seventh with a three-up three-down inning and set the stage for a dramatic walk-win.

It all happened with two outs. Bella Cappo started the Moyle/Finnish Coat rally with a base hit up the middle. Arko reached next on a fielder’s choice. A single by Alana Nolan brought in Coppo.

A double by AnnaMae Nolan put the winning run at second, and Ashley Johnson at the plate. Johnson delivered the heroics with a hard-hit ball to right center. Two runs scored, and the game was over.

Mettlach was the winner for Moyle/Finnish Coat in the circle. She went all seven innings striking out nine Superior Service batters.

In the words of her coach, “She threw a gem.”
