CHASSELL — While a pesky drizzle fell upon the softball field in Chassell, it had no effect on dampening the hot bats of Wildlife Refuge Cabins Wednesday. The girls in pink stayed two runs ahead of their opponent, the Base Burners, and posted a 9-7 win in Portage Lake Little League Minors softball.
“We swung the bat well,” said their coach Alex Outinen. “I think everybody got at least one hit, and that was good to see. I also thought we played the field well.”
These two rivals knotted at three apiece after the first inning. Scoring for the Base Burners were Annaleigh Bemis, Brooke Waara and Daphne Richard. All reached first with base hits.
Wildlife Refuge Cabins countered with three of their own. Crossing home in the bottom of the first were Emeris Anderson, Eliana Klemett and Sofia Outinen.
In the second, Wildlife Refuge Cabins took a one-run lead with Emeris Anderson getting on base and later scoring courtesy of an RBI by Eliana Klemett.
The girls in pink upped their 4-3 lead by five in the third inning. Swinging a hot bat that inning were Reegan Anderson, Kiera Wesa, Charlotte Klemett, and Delilah Fountaine. All of them scored, as did Emeris Anderson, marking Wildlife’s ninth run. It was Anderson’s third time across home plate, and she made it a 9-3 Wildlife lead.
The Base Burners inched two runs closer in the fourth with tallies scored by Richard and Maylee Curtis to make it 9-5 game with two innings to go. They got even closer in their last at bat with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but seven runs was not enough to catch Wildlife Refuge.
Despite the loss, Base Burners coach Christina Waara was pleased with her girls’ effort.
“We are getting a little better every game we play,” she noted. “Tonight, I like how the girls paid better attention at base running.”
