LAKE LINDEN -- With an open date on the schedule at the end of the Copper Country Women's Fastpitch softball season, teams that needed to make up games could. Gold Standard and Figaro's Pizza had a chance to do just that, and they took advantage of it, playing a doubleheader. Hours later, Gold Standard swept their way into the playoffs with wins of 8-7 and 20-1 at the Boneyard Wednesday.
GOLD STANDARD 8, FIGARO'S PIZZA 7
Gold Standard defeated Figaro’s Pizza 8-7 in the opening game.
For Gold Standard, Emily Jokela was the winning pitcher. She struck out 13 in the process.
At the plate, Gold Standard's Sophia Hampton had three singles. Kyara Mills had two singles. Teegan Miller had a double and a single.
For Figaro’s Pizza, Lena Myhren had a double and a triple, Kira Diaz had a single, and Chloe Myhren had two singles.
GOLD STANDARD 20, FIGARO'S PIZZA 1
In the nightcap, Gold Standard mercied Figaro’s Pizza 20-1 in five innings.
Jokela, again, was the winning pitcher.
Figaro's Pizza pitcher Trinity Raajala took the loss with Lena Myhren coming in as relief.
For Gold Standard, Jovie Daniels had two doubles, Ashlyn Steves and Taylor Goldsworthy each had a double and a single, and Emily Jokela and Sophia Hampton each had two singles.
One more game
The regular season will conclude tomorrow with a game between Figaro’s Pizza and Moyle/Finnish Coat at 5:30 at Legion Field in Calumet Friday.
Playoffs loom
Playoffs start Monday, July 27, with a play-in game between the fourth seed and the fifth seed at 5:30 p.m. at the Boneyard. That game will be followed by the winner of that first game facing the first seed team.
In Chassell, the second seeded team will face the third seeded team at 7 p.m.
The championship game will be held at the Boneyard Wednesday at 7 p.m.
