SPARTA -- The Portage Lake 11U girls softball All-Star Team lost to Georgetown 13-8 in the second game of pool play in the Sparta State Tournament.
"We got down 5-0 in the first inning and played them even up after that," said coach Phil Pietila. "The girls rallied back and played great softball, but we couldn't dig ourselves out.
"Georgetown is a powerhouse but if we make a couple more plays in the field we're right there."
Avery Pietila and Allie Mettlach pitched for Portage Lake.
On Sunday, Portage Lake's offense exploded and beat Plymouth/Canton 24-0 in a three inning mercy rule contest.
Mettlach pitched for Portage Lake.
Portage Lake lost a tiebreaker to advance to the semifinal round.
"It's heartbreaking for the girls to play so well and not get a shot to play for the title," Pietila said. "The girls scored 43 runs in three games and had one rough inning all weekend, and that was the difference in advancing. But, sometimes that's the way it works out and it will make them stronger as a group."
