HOUGHTON -- "Momentum" has been the buzzword in the Garnet Garage dugout since Game Two of the Twilight League semifinals. The buzz hasn’t gone away, as was evident in Game One of the Twilight League Championship Series against Northern Driveline.
Garnet Garage posted 10 runs over the course of a four-inning stretch and earned a "mercy win" (10-0) Tuesday in Houghton.
After neither team scored in the first two frames, Garnet Garage posted two in the third. The runs came off the bat of leadoff hitter Kade Ferrell. He hit a two-run home run over the fence in centerfield.
"Kade’s homer jump started the offense," said Garnet Garage’s player-coach, Kevin Bostwick. "It set the tone. The bats then came alive in slots one through nine.
In the third, the men in maroon added three more runs. This time it was Gaborik Carlson getting on base and scoring on a Chris Saari single.
A misplayed ball in center hit by Brody Donnelly put him on third with an RBI, and he came home a batter later on a Ferrell single. It was now 5-0 after four.
The scoring cycle repeated itself in innings five and six and led to Garnet Garage’s sizable victory.
In the sixth, two walks issued by Alex Nordstrom did not help. Another base rap by Carlson scored two, and a Chris Saari single put the nail in the coffin with run number 10 for Garnet Garage.
Starter Rylan Isaacson earned another postseason win for Garnet. In 13 innings of playoff pitching, the right hander has allowed just one earned run. Tuesday he went six innings, striking out four, walking four, and he was backed by good defense.
Quite impressive according to Bostwick.
"He is a gamer and comes through when we need him most," Bostwick stated. "Game ball goes to Rylan."
