KINGSFORD -- Some local teams got the high school volleyball season started this weekend at the Kingsford Invite. In the semifinals, the Hancock Bulldogs defeated the Houghton Gremlins in three sets to reach the finals.
The Gremlins rolled through pool play, defeating Iron Mountain, West Iron County and Escanaba, winning all six sets they played.
Against the Bulldogs, the Gremlins fell 25-20 in the first set before needing extra points to beat their rivals in the second set, 28-26. However, the Bulldogs took the third set, 15-13.
For the weekend, Katia Rudak had a strong showing for Houghton with 11 aces and 62 digs. Alyssa Northey had seven aces, 35 digs, and 71 assists.
Lydia Williams had nine aces, 23 kills, and five blocks. Ellie Hainault added six aces, 16 kills, and 14 blocks.
