Lakes football opens season with strong win over Hematites

HOUGHTON -- Looking to build off a strong 2025 season, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes carried that momentum into the start of the 2026 season as they shined brightly Thursday at Kearly Stadium on the campus of Michigan Tech University. They defeated the Ishpeming Hematites, 52-36, in the process.

In 8-player football, scoring can come fast and furious, and for Lake Linden, it certainly did. They scored 14 points in the first quarter, 24 in the second, and added 14 more in the third.

Brady Axford had a strong day through the air to lead the offense, going 5-for-5 for 103 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, he ran the ball 16 times for 167 yards, one touchdown and two two-point conversions. He also caught a pass for six yards.

Blake Lebo also was strong through the air, going 4-for-4 for 34 yards with one touchdown and one two-point conversion. On the ground, he ran five times for 20 yards with two touchdowns.

Also on the ground, Josh Daavettila ran 12 times for 49 yards with one two-point conversion. He also made one catch for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Through the air, Tyler Axford had three receptions for 28 yards, one touchdown and one two-point conversion. Lukas Axford also had three catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Tyler Axford blocked a punt.
