ISHPEMING -- Looking to move to 2-0 Friday night, the Calumet Copper Kings football team scored 14 straight points to open the game. Still leading 14-0 heading into the fourth quarter on the road against the Westwood Patriots, the Copper Kings outscored the hosts 13-8 in the final quarter to come away with a 27-8 victory.
Calumet's offense ran 53 plays for 305 yards of offense while the defense held the Patriots to 142 yards, 121 of which were on the ground. Calumet had 78 yards through the air and 227 on the ground.
The Copper Kings also came up with two interceptions, but turned the ball over twice with fumbles.
Keith Koivisto got Calumet on the board in the first quarter with a 31-yard run. Oskar Loukus' point after attempt missed, but the Copper Kings led 6-0.
In the second quarter, Loukus found Owen Peterson for a nine-yard pass that ended as a touchdown. Trent Anderson ran the two-point conversion to give Calumet a 14-0 lead before the half.
The game remained a two-score game in favor of the Copper Kings into the fourth quarter. Then Loukus ran into the end zone from eight yards out. He followed that up with the point after, and Calumet led 21-0 at that point.
Anderson capped the visitors' scoring with an 18-yard run. Loukus missed the extra point, but Calumet led 27-0.
Westwood finally got one late when Ryan Perry broke a 62-yard run for a touchdown.
Loukas went 4-for-7 through the air for 66 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 24 times for 120 yards and a touchdown.
Anderson ran 10 times for 66 yards and a touchdown. He was also good defensively, with four tackles, including two tackles for loss.
Koivisto ran five times for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Andrew Junttila led the Copper Kings' receivers with three catches for 68 yards.
