Huskies soccer falls in GLIAC opener at Kearly Stadium

HOUGHTON -- The Michigan Tech Huskies soccer team fell 2-0 in its GLIAC opener against Saginaw Valley State on Friday night at Kearly Stadium. The Huskies dominated the first half but surrendered a pair of goals in the second half.

Senior midfielder Reilly Lovercheck broke down her defender in the 25th minute and had a quality scoring chance saved. Senior midfielder Ryley Winrich hit the crossbar minutes later while freshman midfielder Kivrin Platt and fifth-year defender Olivia Gette had first-half chances saved.

Saginaw Valley broke the stalemate at 49:31 when Grace Battershell scored after a nice passing play from Melanie Kolnitys and Emma Bradley.

Avalee Pomper added to the lead at 63:21 with the assist going to Abby Ellis.

Sophomore midfielder Sophie Rater had a great individual effort to create a scoring chance with five minutes left, but the shot sailed high.

Saginaw Valley led in shots 18-13 with a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Michigan Tech led in corner kicks 5-3 and committed only seven penalties to 14 by the Cardinals.
