Kingsford football stays undefeated with win over Calumet

CALUMET -- Friday night, the Kingsford Flivvers showed why they are 5-0 on the season. They put together a complete-game win over the Calumet Copper Kings football team (3-2) with a 37-19 final.
"We knew we had our work cut out for us," said veteran Flivvers coach Mark Novara. "Calumet is tough. They are gritty, and there was nothing easy about playing here in front of their fans. Hats off to them. It is always a good game."
The Flivvers scored first and never looked back. They led the whole game. After posting a first quarter score of 7-0, thanks to an 11-yard touchdown run by Blake Tomasoski, the Flivvers made it 14-0 to start the second quarter as Brock Flaminio brought in a 15-yard pass from quarterback Drew Tomasoki.
However, two of the next three scores belonged to the Copper Kings. Both scores came with less than three minutes to go in the first half. First was a 30-yard touchdown run for six by Keith Koivisto at the 2:54 mark. Then came a pass play from Copper Kings quarterback Tyler Halonen to Andrew Juntilla for 31 yards with about 25 seconds left on the clock before half. This time the extra point was good and the Copper Kings trailed 21-13 as the two teams headed to their locker rooms.
The touchdown throw to Juntilla was Trevor Halonen’s only completion. He was 1-for-3 in pass attempts.
"At half, I did not say much," said Novara. "I liked what I saw and told them to keep it up, and they did."
As the third wound down to around the eight-minute mark, the Flivvers' Flaminio added three with a field goal. Less than two minutes later, the Copper Kings' Halonen found daylight for a 68-yard run for the end zone and six. The quarterback had 13 carries on the night for a total of 159 yards on the ground.
A goal-line crash by Jake Lockhart closed the third for the Flivvers and put Kingsford in the lead at 30-19.
In the fourth, the Flivvers put the proverbial nail in the coffin by adding another TD and an extra point at around the 3:15 mark. It came courtesy of a four-yard pass to receiver Parker Rossato open in the end zone. This made the score 37-19.
"Very proud of the boys, said Novara. "They had a job to do, and they did it."

Calumet will travel to Houghton for a WestPAC bout Friday. Calumet will encounter a Gremlins team that is 1-4 on the season.
