Lakes sail past Speedgirls in volleyball

LAKE LINDEN -- While energy and team spirit cannot win games on their own, they can certainly lead to a victory. Newly-minted Lake Linden-Hubbell volleyball coach Alyssa Roose is certainly a believer in this theory as a lively bench and enthusiastic home court led to a 3-0 sweep of the Bessemer Speedgirls on Thursday.
The Lakes won the match with scores of 25-14, 25-9 and 25-12.
"I preach good energy," said Roose. "I believe that if we don’t have good energy, then we do not succeed. If we are up, we are more likely to succeed."
In the first set, the Speedgirls had a lead at 8-6 and 10-8 before the Lakes tied it at 10 and again at 11. Then service runs by Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Jovie Daniels, Lissa Johnson and Payton Goldsworthy had the Lakes outscore their opponent 15-4 for a win.
The second set was much the same except the Lakes held the Speedgirls to under 10 points. Strong service was key. This included well-placed balls by Emily Burnham in the opening part of the set. Ashlyn Steves was at the line later in the set with a run of five, which included two aces, and again Goldsworthy closed it out at 25-9.
While the third set was tied at six, that is the best the Speedgirls could do. A 9-7 Lakes lead morphed into a 15-10 score and an eventual 25-12 win.
Roose added that she was pleased to get everybody in the game.
"Game ball goes to Faith Cleary," she added. "She played great."
On defense the Lakes had 18 digs. Leading the charge on this were Goldsworthy and Steves with five apiece. Offensively, the Lakes had an impressive 25 aces. Johnson posted nine of them and Ella Schneiderhan had five.
