HOUGHTON -- One championship trophy stayed in the Copper Country Saturday as Houghton hosted the Upper Peninsula Cross Country Finals for the first time in 20 years.

That belonged to the L'Anse girls who retained their Division 3 title with 38 points. They were followed by Ewen-Trout Creek 74 and Rapid River 82.

"One of our keys to success is the athletes held each other accountable," L'Anse coach Erin DiCarlo said. "This is a tight-knit group. This is also huge for our program. It helps other kids when they see the success. It was good for us to run against Houghton. They're the only team to beat us all year. They made us better."

Superior Central freshman Edye Burdette became the individual winner, covering the hilly 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 55 seconds. She was followed by E-TC senior Bree Besonen at 20:46.7 and Crystal Falls Forest Park freshman Ellie Zaupa (21:59).

Dollar Bay freshman Lily Halkola was the area's leader in fifth (22:19.9) and junior Lily Froese paced the Purple Hornets in seventh (22:43.3) on a sunny day which the temperatures hovered near 80.

"It feels exciting to be part of this," Froese said. "I think our depth helped. This is a very big motivator for us. This is a tough course and it was too hot."

L'Anse junior Kwynn Voskuhl placed ninth (22:50.5) with classmate Princess Pierre in 10th (23:11.2) and senior Tessa Thor 13th (23:34).

Eighth-grader Arianna Jahfetson was Baraga's pacesetter in 20th (24:02.8).

The Marquette girls edged Houghton 49-55 for the D-1 championship. Third-place Sault Ste. Marie had 67 points, followed by Negaunee at 83.

Marquette freshman Charlotte Jones had the day's fastest time among the girls at 19:42.4, followed by Kingsford junior Maria Murvich (20:02.8), Negaunee freshman Julia Plaxco (20:11.6) and Houghton junior Holly Cooke (20:27.2).

Three additional Gremlins reached the podium. They were freshman Emma Jukuri in seventh in a personal-best 20:44.3, senior Norah Woodruff eighth (21:01.9) and sophomore Brooke Hoppe 11th (21:22.1).

"I'm happy with where we finished," Jukuri said. "This is my first time under 21. It feels real good to run my best race of the year and reach that goal. This is something we can build on. It was a little hot out there, but it was okay."

Calumet's leader was junior Bethany McParlan in 25th (23:59.8).

In D-2, Munising was crowned champion for the first time in four years when it was in D-3.

The Mustangs had 48 points, followed by Rudyard 57, Jeffers 69 and Hancock 113.

Newberry senior Abby Taylor earned top honors at 20:16.1, followed by sophomore teammate Molly McNamara (20:29.3) and Munising freshman Emma Conklin (21:15.1).

Jeffers junior Remi Coponen was 11th (22:49.5), followed by classmates Sophia Johnson (23:07.4) and Karissa Rautiola (23:19.2).

Hancock was led by junior Abby Bradway in 26th (24:55.5).
