Bulldogs baseball splits with Miners

NEGAUNEE — Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning in the opener, the Hancock Bulldogs baseball scored twice, but could not find one more run before the final out was made, leading to a 3-2 loss on the road to the Negaunee Miners. In the nightcap, Hancock scored the game’s first 13 runs in a 13-1 win.

Caleb Isaacson threw a gem for the Bulldogs in the first game, striking out five, walking two and giving up six hits over five innings.

At the plate, center fielder Zach Geborkoff had a good game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the offense.

He led off the fifth inning with a single to right field. Catcher Luke Mikkola walked. Isaacson was then hit by a pitch to create a bases loaded situation. Right fielder Alex Pietila was then hit by a pitch two batters later, which brought Geborkoff home.

The Bulldogs’ second run was scored two batters later, when second baseman Ned Larson singled to right, bringing Mikkola across the plate in the process.

In the nightcap, pitcher Bryce Hanner helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 at the plate, knocking in five runs and scoring twice. On the mound, he walked three, but threw a no-hitter.

Catcher Benny Keranen was the only other Bulldogs hitter to collect more than one hit, going 2-for-2 at the plate, drawing a walk, knocking in one, and scoring once.

Mikkola went 1-for-4, with two RBI.
