SAN DIEGO — Although outfielder Garrett Mitchell gracefully accepted congratulations for robbing Manny Machado of a tying home run late in the Milwaukee Brewers' Division Series-clinching victory, he clearly wasn't all that impressed with himself. To Mitchell, that dramatic play was just ...
CHICAGO — Jo Adell and José Ramírez powered Cleveland with a pair of two-out triples, and the Guardians avoided an AL Division Series sweep by cooling off the Chicago White Sox with a 9-3 victory in Game 3 on Wednesday. Adell's three-run triple gave Cleveland a 4-1 lead in the third inning. Ramírez's three-bagger drove in Travis Bazzana and Patrick Bailey for a 7-3 advantage in the eighth. "We continued to pile on," Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said. "I think that's been the difference of the first couple games to today was Game 2, we were able to get a couple runs but weren't ...
NEW YORK — Victor Mesa Jr. didn't bother to watch his home run land in Yankee Stadium's right-field seats, instead turning to his Tampa Bay teammates in the third base dugout. Rays manager Kevin Cash waved an arm and pointed toward first base, urging Mesa to start the type of trot the 25-year-old yearned of when he defected from Cuba in 2018. "That's the moment that you want to live when you're growing up," Mesa said after his tiebreaking, two-run homer off Max Fried in the sixth inning lifted Tampa Bay over the New York Yankees 4-3 on Wednesday night for a three-game sweep of ...

The Dodgers won back-to-back games in Atlanta to take the best-of-five matchup 3-1 and advance to an NLCS rematch with Milwaukee as they seek to become the first National League team to win three straight World Series. Game 1 ...
BEIJING (AP) — Coco Gauff lost to a player she had beaten in all five of their previous matchups after receiving what she described as an "insane" amount of racist comments on social media following a controversial point in the preceding round. The 19th-ranked Elise Mertens beat the fourth-ranked Gauff 6-3, 6-3 to reach the China Open quarterfinals on Wednesday. In Monday's match against home player Sun Xinran, Gauff stopped a rally after electronic advertising boards lining the court flickered during a point late in the first set. Sun appeared about to win the point when Gauff ...
SAN DIEGO — When right-hander Michael King dramatically emerged from the bullpen in a darkened Petco Park to pitch in the eighth inning of Game 3 just two days after he made a five-inning start in Game 2, the San Diego Padres' desperate determination to extend their season was clear. The ...
