Garnet slugs past Houghton Building Supply, 14-3
STANTON — There are some nights on the baseball diamond when the ball seems to bounce your way again and again. That appeared to be the case for Garnet Garage on Tuesday as they got the breaks and took advantage of them in a 14-3 route of Houghton Building Supply-Stanton.
“Our bats were clicking tonight,” said Garnet’s player- coach, Kevin Bostwick. “We were able to put the ball in play, and it led to runs. This was a good response to our loss last week.”
Garnet (3-1) got things rolling in the first with one run. However, in the second and third, they put the proverbial nail in the coffin for the eventual win. In the second, they scored five, and in the third, they added six.
Rob Brookes was the starter for Stanton (1-3), and his knuckleball did not have its usual mesmerizing effect on this night. Garnet batters were teeing off him to all parts of the field. This included a solo out-of-the-park home run for Garnet’s Brandon Norkel in the third.
“Hats off to Brandon who was just in his second game after having not played for a year,” added Bostwick.
Garnet’s starter Chris Saari threw strikes and allowed just three runs in a complete-game win.
“We had good pitching and good fielding,” said Bostwick. “This was a team effort in all aspects, and it earned us a victory.”
The two long innings in the field (second and third) seemed to put Stanton in a hole with one too many errors making it deeper and deeper according to their player-coach Daron Durocher.
He said, “They hit the ball well and errors cost us. We got down and had a hard time bouncing back.”
He did note the strong work at the plate of leadoff hitter of Zach Geberkoff who was three for three with two runs and an RBI.
“You have to look on the positives, and Zach’s hitting tonight was certainly one of them,” added Durocher.
