REL-Mohawk swings past Stanton, 8-2
STANTON – REL-Mohawk Technology are proving to be the team to beat this season in the Twilight League. They won their second game in a row on Tuesday as they downed Houghton Building Supply-Stanton 8-2.
The key to victory was consistency at the plate according to player-coach, Tyler Loukus.
“We hit the ball well and put it in play,” he said. “We have also had good pitching and very few errors in the field.”
On the other bench, player-coach, Daron Durocher, admitted his squad suffered from too many errors.
“We didn’t make the plays we needed to,” he said. “We threw the ball away, and that hurt us early on.”
Two errant throws by Stanton (1-1) in the second inning led to extra bases and eventually two runs courtesy of a Benny Keranen single up the middle. It was a 3-0 REL lead after two.
On the hill for REL (2-0) was Alan Jurmu. He earned the win, going five innings and allowing two runs. Sam Kariniemi pitched the last two frames. Eli Louma bore the loss for Stanton.
Stanton’s best frame was the fourth where they scored their only two runs of the game. However, REL was now up by five. Plating runs that inning were Zach Geberkoff and Joel Durocher. Geberkoff got on with a single and Durocher with a fielder’s choice. They made it home with a base hit off the bat of Brycyn Nettel.
Two, however, would not be enough as REL added three more in the top of the seventh to seal the deal.
Those runs came in on walks and three batters who were hit by pitches in a row by Stanton reliever, Brad Juntinen. As well, a Keranen single helped the REL cause.
“When innings are extended because of errors that sets the tone,” added Durocher.
