Keweenaw Bay firefighters earn advanced credentials

KBFD members Garrick Lamb and Jake Putala successfully completed Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and HazMat courses, leading to certificates in all three areas.

KEWEENAW BAY — Two firefighters from the Keweenaw Bay Fire Department (KBFD) have recently earned new certifications, ensuring that they are better prepared to respond to emergencies in Baraga Township.

KBFD members Garrick Lamb and Jake Putala successfully completed Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and HazMat courses, leading to certificates in all three areas. The 295-hour training spanned four months and included dozens of lessons and two final exams.

“Learning the best firefighting methods is crucial in order to provide high-quality services to the people of Baraga Township,” Lamb stated. “As a result of our training, we are more equipped to handle the many dangerous situations that may arise.”

The courses, led by veteran instructor Jon Stone, took place at several Copper Country fire departments. L’Anse Fire Department’s Cory Frisk organized much of the training in Baraga County.

“I thank Jon, Cory, and all of the experienced fire service members for sharing their knowledge with us,” Putala added. “We are looking forward to implementing our new skills as our department continues to protect the people and property of Baraga Township.”

KBFD Chief Diane Morin, who is also certified in these areas, commended Lamb and Putala for their shared commitment to public safety.

“As chief of the department, I am proud to see two additional members successfully complete this comprehensive training program,” Morin stated. “Our department continues to look for new members, so anyone who is interested in serving can contact us anytime.”

Both firefighters also earned certificates in advanced vehicle stabilization and vehicle extrication.
