Keweenaw County Public Safety Day added mental health aspect

EAGLE Harbor — The annual Keweenaw County Public Safety Day, which took place Saturday, added a new element to the festivities. This year, the day began with a 5K run/walk, Shine the Light 4 Healthy Minds. The race was put on by Keweenaw Support 4 Healthy Minds, in conjunction with the Keweenaw County Sheriff Department and Keweenaw Community Foundation. Shine the Light 4 Healthy Minds was a fundraiser for KS4M.

The race kicked off at 10 a.m. followed by the annual Public Safety Day, which ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cool, foggy weather, with intermittent rain, did not dampen Saturday’s attendance.

“In spite of the weather, we had a good turnout,” Keweenaw County Sheriff Curt Pennala said.

Pennala said there were approximately 30 people who registered for the race, which was more successful than event organizers had anticipated for the first-time event.

“We had some last minute people who signed up,” said Pennala, “and with the weather, it really turned out well.”

The day also included two kids’ races, with 40 to 50 youth running.

Weather prevented setting up the bouncy house for the Public Safety Day, but there were a lot more raffle ticket items this year, Pennala said. There were also several kid vs. officer basketball games.

“All around, we had a really good time despite the rain,” Pennala said.

Several emergency vehicles of various types were on display, from fire trucks to search and rescue gear, from a number of organizations; the various fire department and first responder groups — Mercy Ambulance, EMFs and equipment, along with search and rescue vehicles and equipment. Hot dogs, chips, ice cream and munchies were available again this year.

This year’s event was different from past years. Since the event was first organized, it has been held in Mohawk, sometime around the third week of July. This year, however, it was moved to Eagle Harbor.

‘We changed the location this year to the Eagle Harbor Park,” Pennala said, “so that our event was on the same day as the run, and in the same location.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
