HANCOCK – At approximately 7:13 p.m. Sunday, the Hancock Police Department responded to a call from an unidentified male caller who stated he had placed two bombs in the area of the Ramada Inn and M&M PowerSports, both on Navy Street.
According to a release from Hancock Police, the caller stated he had a rifle and a handgun and would shoot people at the hotel.
Police Chief Tami Sleeman said the call came in directly to the Hancock Police phone number, rather than through 911.
The threats indicated that a bomb would detonate within a specified timeframe.
“The threat was there was a bomb at M&M Powersports,” she said, “and there was a bomb in the parking lot of the Ramada.”
The Hancock Fire Department responded to the call, and was placed on standby in case the threat was deemed credible.
A thorough search of both areas was conducted, but no suspects, explosive devices, or credible evidence of a threat were found, the release says.
Around Midnight, the scene was deemed safe and normal operations resumed.
Sleeman said Portage UP Health System Portage hospital went into lockdown as a result of the calls as a precautionary measure.
“The Police Department locked the Ramada Inn down,” she said, “because of the people inside, so we locked that down, too.”
Sleeman said the incident remains under intense investigation, and police will release more details when it possible.
The Hancock Police were assisted on the scene by Houghton Police Department, Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, and the Michigan State Police Calumet Post.
Special thanks to all officers involved, the release said, for their “quick actions, teamwork and dedication to duty to ensure the safety of our community and the protection of everyone involved.”
“Incidents like this highlight the importance of your commitment, training, and calm professionalism under pressure,” the release states.
“The response of all the agencies was phenomenal,” Sleeman said. “It is amazing how committed and dedicated our officers are to the communities.”
