Accident in Houghton

Two-vehicle mishap Tuesday morning

HOUGHTON – The Houghton Police Department responded to a two-vehicle personal injury crash at approximately 8 a.m. Tuesday, at the intersection of Sharon Avenue and Portage Street, according to a HPD press release.

According to police, a vehicle driving by a 16-year-old Houghton resident was traveling south on Portage Street and stopped at the stop sign at the intersection. A second vehicle, driven by a 71-year-old Laurium resident was traveling east on Sharon Avenue, stopped at the stop sign, then proceeded through the intersection with it collided with the southbound vehicle.

Polly Salmi, police department administrative assistant, said the Jaws of Life were requested at the scene in case they were needed. It was a precaution, she said, and extraction was not necessary. However, a passenger in the southbound vehicle was transported to UP Health System – Portage for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

No other information is currently available as the incident remains under investigation by the Houghton Police Department.

Houghton Police were assisted on the scene by the Hancock Police Dept., Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Tech Public Safety and Police Services, Hurontown Fire Dept. and the Houghton Fire Department.
