Voters pass two measures, reject two
Houghton — More than 8,000 votes were cast in Houghton and Baraga Counties Tuesday to decide on four millage proposals. Three of the four were requests for new millage while one was a renewal. When the ballots were counted one new millage and the renewal passed while two proposals, which called for the construction of new facilities failed.
Voters rejected a request for a millage increase to fund the construction of a new county jail and improvements to other county buildings. Of 8,230 votes cast, unofficial results show 4,601 no votes to 3,629 yes, roughly a 56% to 44% margin.
Voters also rejected a millage request by the Copper Country Intermediate School district for improvements and additions to educational facilities. It was defeated by a 60 – 40 margin (5,868 no, 3,917 yes)
The only new millage approved was a request by Copper Shores Community Health Foundation, to help fund the Elder Nutrition program (Meals on Wheels). It passed 4,336 to 3,871 (53% to 47%).
Finally A millage renewal request by Canal View care facility passed 5,009 yes to 3,159 no, a margin of 61-39 %.
