Pigs N Heat to include raffles

HOUGHTON — Pigs N Heat will have several prizes to award this year during the annual hockey game. This year, the game will take place at the Michigan Tech Student Development Complex.  Michigan Tech, a large supporter of the charity, is donating the ice time, as well as a sky box. The SDC will also open their concession stands. Lt. Nick Roberts of the Houghton Police Department said the sky box will be included in the raffle.

“We’ll be raffling that off like a week before the game, so we can find the person who wins, to make sure they want it,” Roberts said. “I think it will seat about 12.”

Organizing a large event like a charity hockey game is no small feat, particularly this one, because it involves raffle prizes, which requires an abundance of time.

“We’re still getting the raffles together,” Roberts said. “There’ll be cash prizes — I think our top prize is a $1,000 cash, then $750, then $500. Other cash prizes, too, along with other prizes we’ll be handing out.”

While there will be quality raffle prizes this year, due to logistical difficulties, there will not be as many offered as in previous years, Roberts said. In past years, there have been as many as 150 prizes offered at games, but that quantity was simply too hard to accommodate this year.

“p1″>”That’s a lot of work for us, so we’re downsizing the prizes. We go out to business and they are very generous — they do donate a lot. But we just can’t do it.  I mean, 150 plus prizes is a lot to get through,” Roberts said.

Another added advantage to fewer raffle prizes is it will shorten the length of the event.

“It will shorten the game up a little bit, so people aren’t there so late, so we’ll try to get ya in, get ya out,” Roberts said.

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. at the SDC. Tickets are $3 apiece or two for $5 and are available at any police station in Houghton and Keweenaw County, as well as from law enforcement agents and firefighters.
