October 25

• Haunted Smelter 7 – 10:30 p.m. The Quincy Smelter transforms into a ghoulish playground when Michigan Tech’s Visual and Performing Arts Department teams up with the Quincy Mine Hoist Association to present “Haunted Smelter: Descent Into Madness.” Expect spine-tingling sets, live actors, and atmospheric chills in one of the Copper Country’s most storied locations.

• Coat the Copper Country distribution will be open to the public (all ages) on 10 a.m. 2 p.m. at The Salvation Army building, 408 Ravine St. Hancock.

• Backstage Jazz 7:30 p.m. Rozsa Center. Join the MTU Jazz Lab Band for an exciting night of big band compositions by Pontiac, Michigan-born trumpeter, composer, and arranger Thad Jones. Directed by Drew Kilpela Workshop Brass Band kicks off the night with high-energy New Orleans brass band music.

• Fall Bazaar noon to 3 p.m. The Dorcas Society of SS Peter & Paul Lutheran, 1010 Madeleine Street, Houghton, is holding its 78th Fall Bazaar, along with a Trunk or Treat for kids.  Funds raised go toward missions, both near and far.

• “A Toast to Big Annie!” at the Calumet Theatre begins with a free screening of “Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913” from 6:30 to 7:30. p.m. Bar opens at 6 p.m. Limited tickets are available at $65 per person to attend a fundraising reception in the ballroom from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. where you will be welcomed with piano music by Paul Behn, followed by an exclusive talk by author Steve Lehto, appetizers from Miscowaubik, live music by The Jones Brothers and a silent auction. • Creative writing workshop, 10:30 a.m. Portage Lake District Library. Charli Mills will lead the workshop and explore the art of 99-word story telling. All are welcome, especially international adults (ages 16+) — all levels of English are welcome.

October 26

• Grace Lutheran Church Reunion, 11 a.m. All former members are invited to a festive worship followed by fellowship with hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, cake, and more goodies. Mingle with past and present Grace members, and reminisce with others about the history of Grace Lutheran Church.

Now through Oct. 31

• Coat the Copper Country. We are collecting clean, new or gently used coats, snowpants, boots, waterproof gloves/mittens, hats and scarves for all ages, especially children (and men). Donations can be dropped off donations at The Salvation Army.

November 4

• The November meeting of the Houghton-Keweenaw Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at the Bonfire in Houghton. The business meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. followed by a buffet lunch. The guest

speaker will be Mike Lutz, Executive Director of Omega House. All members are encouraged to attend. Contact person – Steven Karpiak, 482-8455.

November 8

• Fourth annual Hunter’s Ball, 7-11 p.m Range Lounge, South Range. Sponsored by South Range 4th of July committee. Live music by Slick Nickel, $5 cover charge. 50/50 and gift basket drawings. All proceeds go to South Range 4th of July festivities.
