May 6

• Used book Sale. The Lake Linden-Hubbell School Public Library Used Book Sale to be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Children’s books will be sold at 10 for $1.00 and adult book at 2 for $1.00. Cash and Checks are accepted. All proceeds will be used to purchase new books and to support library programs. Enter the library at the rear of the high school on the ground level. We hope to see you there!

May 7

• Fine arts night, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Houghton Elementary. The all school art show features art from every student on display. Participate in the scavenger hunt to explore the exhibits. The 4th & 5th grade choir will perform at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Find the event on Facebook for updates and announcements. This is an annual event to celebrate the creativity of our students at Houghton Elementary School.

May 9

• Pancake Breakfast. The Stanton Township Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Pancake & French Toast Breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon, at the firehall. $10 Adults – $5 children under 12

• Spring on the Wing a City of Houghton bird festival celebrating World Migratory Bird Day. 7-9 a.m. Early bird walk (Nara Nature Boardwalk. 9:30-11 a.m. Bird Banding Demonstration (Huron Street Waterfront Park. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. “Stopover” Community Space opens (Huron Street Waterfront Park), Bird City information table (Visit Keweenaw), Local conservation organizations “Try binoculars / spotting scope” station, Kids’ bird activity table. 3-4 p.m. Bird program & discussion with Joseph Youngman (Carnegie Museum Houghton). 6 p.m. Bird Trivia (Beviamo Wine & Cocktail Lounge)

• 15th Annual Used Book Sale and Pie Social, 9 am – 2 pm. First United Methodist Church, 401 Quincy Street, Hancock, between City Hall and Quincy Green. A wide range of well-organized books suitable for all ages and all interests, including an abundance of biographies and memoirs. You’ll want to arrive early for the best selection. The sale is in a huge space for easy, pleasant browsing. When you’ve finished shopping, enjoy the Pie Social. There will be more than two dozen varieties of homemade pie for sale. Book sale proceeds will go toward the church’s stained glass windows.

May 10

• Forum on the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative. The Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will host a public forum online about the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative at 10:30 a.m. The speaker will be Erika Vye who serves on the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative leadership team, an organization that brings together schools and community partners to prepare K-12 students to become knowledgeable citizens and stewards of the Lake Superior watershed. Vye is a geosciences research scientist at the Michigan Tech Great Lakes Research Center. The forum is open to the public. Find Zoom link at keweenawuu.org

May 16

• Military-Alumni Appreciation. In conjunction with Armed Forces Day, the Houghton High School Alumni Association will host a Military-Alumni Appreciation event on the high school lawn, with a brief patriotic ceremony at 10:30 a.m. conducted by HHSAA President, Mark Smith, Dylan Carlson and JR ROTC. It will include a flag raising, bugle reveille, and a complimentary picnic lunch to first 100 Veterans, served 11:30AM – 12:30 PM in multipurpose room. Non-military tickets are $10 per person, available morning of event. Questions, contact by phone or text (906) 231-0497. All veterans are welcome and open to the public. This is intended as a dine-in service.

• Plant Sale. The Houghton Trinity Episcopal Church is hosting the Pewabic Street Community Garden 19th Annual Plant from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 205 E Montezuma Ave. Vegetable starts, Perennials for Sun & Shade, Native plants, Berries, Herbs, Houseplants and more.
