Pigs N Heat all for fun and fun for all

HOUGHTON — Pigs N Heat is a charity organization that holds an annual hockey game to raise funds to help victims of fires, accidents, and other tragic events. It also works hard to make the event fun for the entire family.

The organization gives free tickets to elementary school students in all the schools in Houghton and Keweenaw counties, Lt. Nick Roberts of the Houghton Police Department said. At the game, the children put their tickets in for a raffle, just as the adults do. However, the children’s raffle features kids’ prizes, Roberts said. In addition to prizes, McGruff the Crime Dog and Sparky the Fire Dog will also be at the event, Roberts added.

Michigan Tech, a generous sponsor of Pigs N Heat, not only donated the use of the university’s Student Development Complex and ice time, but also donated the use of the skybox, along with free food and refreshments to the lucky person to win the use of the box in which to enjoy the game in comfort. The winner of the skybox was selected by raffle earlier this week, Roberts said.

“It was a senior citizen who won it,” he said. While she was having some difficulty trying to decide how best to utilize the box, which has a capacity of 12 people, she believes she arrived at a solution.

“Her grandson is on a hockey team, so what she will do is probably invite his hockey team,” Roberts said. “They will have pizzas and pop, so it will be right up their alley.”

The concession stand will be also open for the event, Roberts said.

The game will be played by several teams, and will offer great entertainment.

“The B Team will be playing the first period, the A Teams will play the second two periods,” Roberts said, although as of right now, the organization is not planning more than one game for the event, Roberts said that could change.

“We have to do all the raffles, all the kids’ prizes in between periods, which takes time,” Roberts said.

Tickets for the game are still available at the Houghton Police Department on Shelden Avenue in Houghton, and at the SDC ticket office at the time of the game.
