In need of some work

Cars cross the Portage Lake Lift Bridge Wednesday afternoon. Traffic backed up Wednesday morning during a “poorly-timed lift for maintenance,” about 8 a.m., said Rob Tervo, manager of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s service center in Ishpeming. Parts of the bridge were greased to keep it operating properly. Tervo did not have the length of the procedure, but said it went longer than the 15 to 20 minutes that had been expected. He said in the future, the lifts would be restricted to low-traffic periods. If maintenance has to be done during peak traffic hours, MDOT will provide notification ahead of time, Tervo said.
