Houghton man killed in one-vehicle crash

CALUMET — A Houghton man was killed in a one-car crash in Calumet Township Tuesday.

The crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. on U.S. 41 near No. 4 Road in Centennial Location, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

The sole passenger, a 77-year-old Houghton man, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. The driver, a 65-year-old Houghton man, sustained minor injuries.

The GMC S10 Blazer was headed northbound on U.S. 41 when the driver lost control and drove onto the shoulder. He overcorrected, sliding sideways and flipping the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said. The driver was wearing a seatbelt, while the passenger was not, the sheriff’s office said.

Alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage. Superior Service Towing removed it from the scene.

The crash is under investigation. Further details will be released later, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, Laurium Police Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Calumet Township Fire Rescue, Mercy EMS and the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s office.
