Hancock man arrested in Marquette County
MARQUETTE — A Hancock man was arrested in Marquette County Monday on several fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and weapons charges.
Marquette police began purusing Garth Jurgensen, 50, Sunday morning after being notified of a possible suspended driver, according to a release from the Marquette Police Department. They tried to stop his car on Front Street and Lakeshore Boulevard, but Jurgensen sped up. After Jurgensen crossed the Alger County line on U.S. 41, officers stopped pursuit.
The next morning, officers found Jurgensen in the Chocolay Township area. He was taken into custody for fleeing and eluding and reckless driving.
More charges were added. A search of his vehicle yielded various kinds of ammunition, the release said. After executing a search warrant at a Marquette-area motel Jurgensen was staying at, officers found two firearms in his room, one loaded.
Jurgensen is known to travel from the Houghton/Hancock area to Marquette frequently, the Houghton Police Department said in a release.
In January, Jurgensen was diagnosed with Gastrostoma multiforme, a form of cancer that results in tumors in astrocytes, supportive tissue of the brain.
Jurgensen is charged with fleeing a police officer – fourth degree, reckless driving, two counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer, being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition. Bond was set at $41,000.
The Chocolay Township Fire Department assisted in the response.
