Hancock Superintendent discusses learning plan, thanks

HANCOCK — In a Friday email, Superintendent Steve Patchin told parents and students that Week One of the Learning Plan, has been completed. The plan, he said, expanded on the district’s activity packet program begun on March 16 when face-to-face learning at all schools was suspended.

Patchin in the email included points of clarification regarding the plan.

For middle and high school:

• 60 percent participation is required in each class to earn a “pass,” otherwise an “incomplete” will be issued until the student reaches the 60 percent participation mark. Those earning an “incomplete” will be offered options in the summer and/or during the fall semester to earn a “pass.” Participation is only for activities distributed starting April 20, last week, until the official end of this school year on June 10.

• The school recognizes the increasing anxiety parents are experiencing regarding activities and assignments. Teachers are monitoring this closely and making adjustments, including providing weekly schedules. Staff members are working on finding balance in this new situation. Please keep providing the school feedback.

“We can’t thank you enough for your efforts at home in this expanded parent role,” Patchin said, “and for your patience as we develop educational expertise in this area of blended distance learning engagement.”

• Weekly activity packets can be returned to either the library book return at the District Library at the High School entrance, or to the plastic drop box outside the Barkell Elementary entrance.

• Students at the High School and Middle School can still pick up their locker contents at packet pick-up each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Barkell elementary students can call the office at 487-9030 to arrange any pick-ups.

“If you need, you can make other arrangements by calling our building offices which still operate Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” Patchin said.

Patchin also used his email to express deep appreciation for organizations who have assisted the school district.

“We would like to thank those who have helped support our continuing operations serving our students and community,” he wrote. The organizations include:

• U Haul for providing us rolls of plastic bags for our distributions!

• Pat’s Food for providing us paper bags for our elementary packet pick-up!

• Michigan Technological University’s Mt. Ripley for providing us the Easter candy that was included in the Easter week packet pick up.

• Domino’s Pizza for providing fresh pizza as part of the food pick-up this past week.

• 31 Backpacks for providing toiletries, laundry detergent, toilet paper and more for families at our last food pick-up.

“More appreciative ‘shout outs’ to come,” Patchin said, “as our community bands together to support each other.”
