LL-H to reopen Sept. 1

LAKE LINDEN — Lake Linden-Hubbell Public Schools will start its school year on Sept. 1, the district board voted Monday.

The district had applied for a waiver to start school ahead of Labor Day, which falls later on the calendar than usual this year.

“This would give us Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, three days before Labor Day weekend, then we’d come back and have a four-day week,” he said.

As of now, 24 students had signed up for kindergarten for the fall and 12 for Young 5s, said Elementary Coordinator Jeff Johnson.

“We’re already ahead of what we graduated, so everyone we get we’re on the plus side of things,” Codere said.

Home-based learning wrapped up at the school Tuesday. At the elementary school, most teachers conducted a final Google Hangouts meeting last week to wish students a good summer break and to finalize any assignments.

Report cards will go out the week of June 15. Students in grades 3 through 6 will get a “P” for passing or “NP” for not passing.

Since Camp Nesbit is shut down until 2021, the school will probably bring two groups next spring, Johnson said.

Athletes should be able to return to the weight room on Thursday, Athletic Director Jack Kumpula said. he is hoping to have the gym reopen on Monday, pending guidance from the MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association).

While groups of up to 50 are allowed in Phase 5 of the state’s reopening plan, it cannot be done in the weight room, or probably the gym, while staying consistent with social distancing, Kumpula said Athletes can also now share equipment, provided it is wiped down after use.

“If we don’t think that we have our ducks in a row, we’re not opening the weight room on Thursday,” Kumpula said. “We will put it off as long as we need to, to make sure that that we can get the kids in there safely, that they can get their work out and then we get them home.”

The district also set a special meeting for 7 a.m. June 26 to accept revised budgets for 2019-20 and a proposed budget for 2020-21.
