Ontonagon Marina weather station operating

Upper Peninsula Sport Fisherman’s Association (UPSFA) President Dale Rantala notified the group’s members, and boaters that the Ontonagon Marina’s new weather station is up and running.

“New weather station activated at the marina,” he said. “Please pass this around so members can check wind before they leave their home.”

The weather station at the Ontonagon Marina was finally installed several weeks ago. The data is flowing out to the world now and can be accessed here: https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=OTNM4.

“Feel free to share with your network throughout the county so they are aware as well,” Rantala, who is also the county sheriff, said.

The weather station is owned and maintained by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) National Weather Service Central Region. The elevation of the site is 186 meters above mean sea level (MSL). The Air Temperature sensor is 2.1 meters above MSL.  The anemometer height is at 10 meters MSL. The Barometer meter is at 186.5 meters MSL.

NOAA provides updated weather conditions on the above mentioned website.

The Ontonagon Harbor is listed as a safe harbor for boats to find refuge in dangerous weather conditions. The Ontonagon Marina is owned by the village of Ontonagon. The marina has rRestrooms, fish cleaning, and slips available to the public.

Boaters have been asking for the weather station to be up and running for a long time, even going so far as to make it a topic of discussion at numerous UPSFA meetings.

The UPSFA is a volunteer run organization that works with local, state, and federal authorities on fish plants, fish habitat improvements, and boating safety.
