12-year-old boy succumbs to injuries

HOUGHTON — The Daily Mining Gazette on Friday received an email in reference to an article published in the Aug. 13, 2020, edition, about a 12-year-old boy who had been airlifted to the University Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor after being swept into Lake Superior on August 11.

“The 12-year-old-boy did not survive long enough to be transported to Children’s Hospital in Lower Michigan,” the email stated.

The name of the sender is withheld, because the DMG is not authorized to release any names contained in the email.

The email was confirmed Friday afternoon when the DMG received a release issued by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, which stated:

“In the process of being transported to the airport, the 12-year-old boy, from Commerce, Michigan, succumbed to his injuries.”

The boy’s injuries were sustained Tuesday, as he was attempting to save his 8-year-old sister, after she was swept out into Lake Superior from Big Travers Beach, near the Traverse River.

Initially, both children were carried by water current into the lake, but were rescued by unrelated people on the beach who were able to reach them using inflatable tubes.

Bootjack First Responders administered CPR to the boy, who was taken by Mercy Ambulance to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium. Due to the extent of his injuries, the child was to be airlifted to the U of M Children’s Hospital, but passed away while being transported to the Houghton County Airport.

The Sheriff’s Office stated in its release that the name of the boy is not being released, due to his being a minor.
