Houghton County waiting to finalize RFP for transfer station

HOUGHTON — Houghton County might have a request for proposal for its transfer station ready for consideration for the county board by its December meeting, Vice Chairman Tom Tikkanen said Tuesday.

The county’s Solid Waste Committee is waiting for the county’s civil attorney to finish reviewing contract language before finalizing a request for proposal, Tikkanen said. The county is looking at either selling or leasing the transfer station to a company that could offer an expanded recycling program.

The committee’s next meeting is 10:30 a.m. Nov. 24.

The board also discussed the status of the county’s former transfer station building on Sharon Avenue. Administrator Ben Larson, who saw the site as part of a visit of all county properties, said he is “alarmed” by the state of the building.

“I would strongly advise us to look at what is the future of the facility … the building now is in pretty rough shape,” he said.

Given its location in Houghton, the property may still have resale value, Larson said. He advised commissioners to visit the property themselves.

Tikkanen suggested he and Commissioner Gretchen Janssen, both realtors, take a look and report back at the December meeting.

“Chances are it’s surplus property that might be disposable,” he said.
