Rock House temporarily closed

HOUGHTON — The Mine Shaft and Rock House Grill & Tavern is temporarily closed after a liquor license suspension last week for potential violations of the state’s COVID emergency order.

The Michigan Liquor Control Commission served an emergency suspension order Wednesday, Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs spokesperson Jeannie Vogel said Monday.

The suspension came after potential violations of the emergency order issued by the state Department of Health and Human Services, Vogel said. As it has yet to go to a hearing, no fine has been issued, Vogel said.

The suspension came five days after the establishment hosted a family night with an estimated 200 people in a protest of the latest restrictions. It was unclear Monday if that had prompted the emergency suspension.

Prohibitions in the state’s current three-week COVID pause, which lasts until Dec. 8, include dine-in service and operating bowling centers. Indoor gatherings are also limited to 10 people from no more than two households.

A sign on the door notified the public of the temporary closure, and listed several agencies involved in the disciplinary action.

“We will be opening again after these parties feel like we have suffered enough and graciously allow us to get back to business,” it said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
