Members of the Hancock Fire Department aim water at a beam on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge Friday night. About 7:55 p.m., there were reports of smoke coming from a steel beam below signs on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge where the Michigan Department of Transportation was doing construction work, the Hancock Police Department said. The police department assisted with traffic control during the event. The scene was cleared about 8:30 p.m.
