Houghton man arrested on meth charge

HOUGHTON — A Houghton man was arrested in Ontonagon County on a methamphetamine-related charge Thursday following a three-month Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) investigation.

UPSET detectives had developed information that the suspect, a 39-year-old Houghton man, had been bringing large quantities of the drug to Houghton County for several months, UPSET said in a release.

After learning the suspect was returning from Minnesota on Thursday, troopers from the Michigan State Police Hometown Security Team conducted a traffic stop on M-28 near Ewen.

An exterior search by the MSP Negaunee Post K-9 Unit indicated drugs were in the vehicle, UPSET said. During a search of the vehicle and passengers, troopers discovered a quarter pound of methamphetamine that the driver was trying to hide on his person, UPSET said. Detectives also seized cell phones and other drug paraphernalia used to smuggle illegal drugs. The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the arrest.

The man is lodged at the Ontonagon County Jail. His name is being withheld pending arraignment in 99th District Court. The Ontonagon County prosecutor’s office is reviewing the case, with more charges expected.
