Houghton High School Choir fundraiser Saturday

HOUGHTON — The Houghton High School Choir will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser this Saturday, Feb. 12, from 4-7 p.m. at the Houghton Elementary School, located at 203 W. Jacker Avenue, in Houghton.

Dinner will include spaghetti, sauce, both with and without meat and sides will include a salad and garlic bread. Gluten-free pasta is available upon request.

“In addition,” said Choir teacher Hillary Arundel, “we will also be conducting a bake sale for those wish to indulge their sweet tooth.”

The choir members are doing several things to obtain the money for the trip, but additional funds are needed.

“The dinner is to help with students who need extra funds to make the trip,” Arundel said. “It’s an expensive trip, but it’s a trip that’s worth it.”

The five-day trip will be educational as well as fun, Arundel said. the choir students will participate in a Choral Clinic at the Newcomb Department of Music at Tulane University. They will also tour Oak Alley Plantation, a historic plantation located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, in the community of Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana. Students will also tour many of the sites in New Orleans, including the French Quarter. They will also watch and listen to street musicians, and if possible, will perform a street show of their own. A particular honor, the choir will also perform outside of the World War II Museum. The trip is scheduled for June 20-25, 2022.

Arundel said if additional fundraisers are necessary, she will plan for them.

“I didn’t want money to be the reason why they couldn’t come,” she said.

It will be a wonderful experience for them, said Arundel, as many of the students have not previously been outside of the Upper Peninsula, or the furthest away they have been is Green Bay.

“So, just going someplace that they might not otherwise have the chance to see and experience,” said Arundel, “and music is an excellent tool to help them achieve that.”

Take-out and Dine-in options are available at the fundraiser, she said. There will be live music performed by the choir and their families.

In order to know how many to plan for, as well for gluten-free noodles and meatless sauce, people are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance.

“Tickets are now available for purchase,” said Arundel. “Please see your friendly neighborhood choir member or stop in the elementary, middle school, or high school offices to purchase tickets. All will need a ticket so we can plan enough food. Limited tickets available at the door.
