Calumet cave in

Downtown street closed temporarily

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette The Calumet Village Fire Department responded to the collapse of a garage that stood between the former Thurner Bakery and the U.P. Pub Monday.

CALUMET – The 300 block of Fifth Street in downtown Calumet was temporarily closed to traffic Monday evening after a garage attached to the south wall of the former Thurner bakery building, located at 315 collapsed.

The Michigan State Police Calumet Post responded when the collapse was reported at 7:17 p.m. Trooper Alan Narhi said. Narhi said it is believed the collapse was caused by the weight of snow on the roof.

“Nobody was inside,” he said, “and there was just minor damage to nearby buildings and vehicles in the road. There were no personal injuries or anything like that.”

Narhi said from what he understands, everyone who needed to be contacted, whether nearby business owners, or people who had vehicles damaged by from debris, was contacted.

Village Manager Megan Haselden said the property is owned by a party in California and had been contacted.

Started by Joseph Thurner in 1920, the Thurner Family Bakery operated at 319 Fifth Street for the next 83 years.

In 2003, fourth generation family members closed the bakery. The building has been vacant for many years. Classified as unoccupied, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has used the property for community initiatives. Local organizers have used the storefront windows for art displays and historic exhibits.

While the street was blocked to traffic, village fire fighters were on scene, removing bricks, blocks and other debris from the roadway, some of which was blown across the street from the force of the collapse.

Shortly afterward, the village Public Works Department removed the debris from the street in order to quickly re-open it to traffic.

Michigan State Police were assisted by the Calumet Village Fire Department, Laurium Village Police and the Calumet Village Public Works Department.

Starting at $3.50/week.
