HPTS students performing well in reading, math

HOUGHTON — Halfway through the years, Houghton-Portage Township Schools students are reaching their reading and math benchmarks, Superintendent Anders Hill said.

“Our kids are on track with all their goals at the midyear,” he said.

The state required the COVID-19 learning goals update for reading and math across Michigan.

In other action, the board:

— Heard administrative reports.

— approved proposed Copper Country Association of School Board award winners.

— Approved the list of spring coaches: Corey Markham (varsity boys golf), Julie Antilla (assistant varsity girls golf), Erik Johnson (head varsity boys track), Bill Bulleit (assistant varsity boys track) Jared Lawson (middle school boys track), Alissa Schmitt (head varsity girls track), Alana Nolan (assistant varsity girls track), Brandi Hainault (middle school girls track), Melissa Baker (varsity softball) and Joe Romano (varsity baseball)

— approved getting assistance from the Michigan Association of School Boards for strategic planning beginning in fall 2022.
