Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette The CopperDog sled dog races enjoyed a huge turnout Friday night, as the races returned to Fifth Street in Calumet this year. Mushers from as far away as Washington came to participate in the 2022 event.

CALUMET — In spite of rain and ice on Saturday, mushers able to complete the 2022 CopperDog150, the CopperDog80, and the CopperDog25.

In the CopperDog150, J.R. Anderson, bib No. 9, was the first place winner. Anderson, who hails from River Rock Kennel in Cook, Minnesota, was back for another CopperDog. His leads were Cocoa and Blackhawk.

On Sunday, CopperDog Chief Timer, Kiko de Melo e Silva, reported that Anderson had a strong showing in all three stages of the CD150 to secure another victory. Anderson’s wife and daughter both raced in the CD25.

Finishing in second was Ryan Anderson, bib No. 12, from Saint Croix Falls, Wsiconsin. His lead dogs, Gable and Muskie, ran along with Quincy and Grout, out of Ryan’s AnderTier Racing kennel. This was Anderson’s fourth CopperDog, and has placed second in back-to-back years.

Third Place went to Joanna Oberg, from Grand Marais, Minnesota, and Run Silent Racing kennel. This was Oberg’s ninth CopperDog 150. Her leads were Tamar, Nikita, Laska, Granite, and Bandit.

The CopperDog150 purse for 2022 was:

— First Place: $6,000.

— Second Place: $4,000.

— Third Place: $2,700.

The CD150 is a 10-dog (10-dog pool), 122-mile (approximate) race run in three stages.

— Stage 1: Calumet to Eagle Harbor (49.4 miles) (Night run).

— Stage 2: Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor (34.2 miles).

— Stage 3: Copper Harbor to Eagle Harbor (37.9 miles).

In the CopperDog80, Martha Shouweiler finished first, followed by Lynne Witte, and Bucky Tippett in third place. CD80, an 8-dog race, came home to Calumet this year and consisted of 76.5 miles, run in two stages. The race kicked off immediately after the CD150. The first stage ran the famous snow road, ending in Phoenix Friday night. The second stage of the race was a day run from Copper Harbor to Eagle Harbor.

In the CopperDog25, Benjamin Thompson finished first with an average speed of 14.4 miles an hour. Geri Minard and Anna Anderson finished second and third, respectively.
