COVID-19 numbers drop in MI

HOUGHTON — State data Tuesday showed declining numbers of new COVID-19 cases in all area counties in the past week.

Houghton County had 46 new confirmed positives since Aug. 16, while Baraga County reported 10 new cases and Keweenaw County two in the same seven-day span.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 418 confirmed positives since Aug. 16 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 87 in Marquette County, 62 in Iron County, 50 in Dickinson County, 46 in Houghton County, 36 in Delta County, 29 in Menominee and Chippewa counties, 20 in Gogebic County, 15 in Ontonagon County, 10 in Baraga County, nine in Luce and Mackinac counties, eight in Alger County, six in Schoolcraft County and two in Keweenaw County.

The state listed three more virus-related deaths in Marquette County and one in Mackinac County.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 58,113 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 888 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 546 confirmed cases and 61 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 730 confirmed cases and 854 probable, 14 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,055 confirmed, 119 probable and 37 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,178 confirmed, 756 probable and eight deaths, seven probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,204 confirmed cases and 778 probable, 13 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,816 confirmed cases and 930 probable, 29 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 1,933 confirmed cases, 382 probable and 54 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,726 confirmed cases and 374 probable, 71 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,201 confirmed cases and 593 probable, 42 deaths and 31 probable; Chippewa County, 3,872 confirmed cases and 5,599 probable, and 91 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,340 confirmed cases, 1,934 probable and 62 deaths, 12 probable; Dickinson County, 5,556 confirmed cases and 2,729 probable, 93 deaths and 23 probable; Houghton County, 7,655 confirmed cases, 1,192 probable, 91 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,502 confirmed cases and 2,578 probable, 137 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 13,799 confirmed cases, 3,650 probable and 134 deaths, 13 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 19,414 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Aug. 16, or an average of about 2,773 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,751,201 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 135 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 37,909.
