CALUMET TOWNSHIP — The Friends of the Calumet Public Library (FOL) has announced its Used Book Sale event for Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Community Room of the library.

The book sale is a fundraiser to support programs and services of the library. Like last year’s November sale, this event will occur at the same time as the Old-Fashioned Christmas Bazaar, which will be held across the hall in the CLK Gym.  The used book sale is open to the public.

Proceeds from the FOL fundraiser go to sponsor library services and programs not provided for by the general library budget.  In recent years, funds have been used to purchase Mango Languages (a world language teaching program available to all library patrons), large print books, multiple titles for our Red Jacket Readers book club, and many new books including additions to the children’s, YA, and adult collections.  Funding also helps support evening programs at the library throughout the year.

The public also invited to attend the monthly FOL meetings, held on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room.  Volunteers are always welcome at the library and we can help connect you with opportunities.

The Calumet Public Library is located at 57070 Mine Street, in Calumet Township, in the rear of the CLK Schools. The CLK Schools library website states that the facility is a combined library that serves as both a school library and as a public library. It is the mission of the Calumet Public-School Library to make educational, informational and recreational materials accessible to the residents of the public library service area, and the students of the Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium and Keweenaw.

The library traces its founding to the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, in 1898, when the corporation opened the original library in 1898. At the time, the Summary of Operations of the company for that year stated:

“The Library will be placed under the control of the Library Board of the Calumet Township School Board.”

The C&H library, like so many other community services, was first provided by the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company in 1898. As mining was drastically declining in the mid-20th century, C&H closed the library in 1944, combining it with the school library to create the Calumet Public-School Library.

The library has kept up with technology, boasting an online card catalog, virtual reference library, Great Lakes Digital Libray, and many other aids, services and programs.

In 1997, the new Calumet Public-School Library was designed and incorporated into the school’s expansion, and combines new oak furniture with refinished antiques from the old library to capture the essence of the turn of the 20th century, when the original library was open.
