New Keweenaw restaurant map app

In an effort to help local residents of the Keweenaw support area restaurants, the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau and Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce are launching a new interactive web map. The map, hosted on Keweenaw.info and Keweenaw.org shows the location of area restaurants and which businesses are providing dine-in, curbside and delivery services.

As businesses weigh the decision to open their doors for dine-in service under the Governor’s Executive Orders 2020-91 and 2020-92, many customers are eagerly awaiting news of which restaurants they can visit. While the executive orders allowed for businesses to offer dine-in service staring on Friday, May 22, several are have chosen to remain take-out only as they work through social distancing, PPE, and sanitation requirements. The map shares which businesses are open for dine-in services and which are still curbside only.

The map was built through a collective effort between the CVB, Chamber, and former resident Abhi Kantamneni who now resides in Guelph, Ontario pursuing a doctorate degree. The map’s information can be updated by business owners or their customers using an online form on Keweenaw.info/COVID19.

“I think of Keweenaw as home”, said Abhi Kantamneni who graduated from Michigan Tech with graduate degrees in Physics and Computer Science. “I just wanted to step-up and pitch in to support all the local businesses working extra hard on the road to recovery.” Abhi is a PhD Candidate at the University of Guelph and a Program Manager at CUSP Network, Canada.

“Things are rapidly changing for local businesses and their customers,” explained Brad Barnett, executive director of the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We wanted to help streamline information on local services as quickly as possible, and this is a great tool to help with that communication.”

Note that there’s a form that customers/business owners can submit to make updates to the map (takes about 24 hours for changes to be approved and updated).
