Michigan Made offers options for Mother’s Day shoppers
HOUGHTON — For local mothers, some of the best ways to show they’re close to your heart can come through gifts close to home.
Michigan Made in Houghton offers a curated collection of Michigan products.
Asked to recommend a Mother’s Day gift, manager Kyllee Puuri said “Every mom needs a bottle of wine.” The shop also offers an assortment of other presents for the mothers in people’s lives, whether lotion, candles, wine glasses or great snacks.
“Our specialty is making beautiful gift baskets, so picking out a collection of those wonderful goodies, putting them all together and really making mom feel special, and something that’s custom for her,” Puuri said.
Whether $20 or $200, the shop puts together baskets tailor-made to every person’s needs.
“We’ve done them in every price point,” Puuri said. “It totally depends on your budget.”
Even if people are only buying one item, Michigan Made can “gift it up” to make it every special for the mother in their life, Puuri said.
Wines are the shop’s biggest draw, Puuri said. She tries to have something for every palate, from sweet to dry and red to white. The biggest emphasis is on stocking wines produced in Michigan.
“All our Michigan wine is made from Michigan fruit — including fruit that is grown in the U.P.,” she said. “We do have a selection of wines that are completely made in the U.P., so you can’t beat that.”
Mother’s Day is a popular time of year for the shop, Puuri said. Around this time of year, Puuri said, men whose wives or girlfriends are fans of the store will often pop in to ask her, “Do you remember what my wife’s favorite wine is?”
“And we see a lot of husbands with their kiddos coming in to pick things out,” Puuri said. “It’s really fun for the kids to get to pick out things for their mom.”
The jewelry section is especially fun for them, Puuri said. There’s a range of options, whether necklaces or earrings. The Upper Peninsula is a frequent tie, either as a figure in the design or the copper used to make it.
The popularity of the jewelry section is no surprise, Puuri said.
“Of course you want to get something for Mom to wear every day that reminds them that you’re thinking about them,” she said.
