June First Friday in Calumet

There’s still a bit of a chill in the air, the days are getting longer and a walk through the Calumet Art District may be just the thing for a nice First Friday evening. Start at the south end with a tour of the new rose garden, check out the poetry reading and experience artistic expression at its Copper Country finest in eight galleries within a half mile.

Calumet Art Center

A change of landscape is in progress at the Calumet Art Center. Wander the circular walking paths through the newly planted Heritage Rose Garden, hear the musical talents of local musician Dave Morehouse as he plays tunes on his accordion and concertina, visit the gallery displaying a beautiful collection of smoke fired pots by clay-worker extraordinaire Ed Gray and sign up for the exciting new line up of Art Class offerings. Paige Wiard Gallery

Wild things – For the month of June the Paige Wiard Gallery has encouraged the artists to “walk on the wild side!” For this Wild Things show, artists have created art work that shows wild creatures, wild colors and wild movement. Caf Rosetta

Repurposed clothing by Katie’s Sew shop and Poetry Open Mic from 6-7pm will be featured at the Caf Rosetta. Bring a poem you’ve written, a favorite somebody else wrote or simply your ears to listen. Enjoy a bowl of Caf Rosetta soup or a cup of iced coffee for an inspiring evening.

Hahn Hammered Copper

Stop by Hahn Hammered Copper this First Friday and check out “Salvagion”- cool, salvaged, recycled industrial objects that will make you happy just looking at them! Always in store- their very own hand hammered copper jewelry and dcor as well as beautiful vintage items. Hahn Hammered Copper will be open on First Friday from 6-9pm.

Copper Country Associated Artists, 205 5th St.

For First Friday in June, Pam Hecht will lead a collage workshop. Participants will explore different techniques of repurposing paper scraps and decorative elements into a piece of artwork. The activity is limited to 25 adults, and will run from 6pm till about 7:30. All materials will be provided, and there will be no early sign ups.

Explore the world from behind the handlebars and lens of photographer Chris Guibert. These giant 4′ x 6′ prints will inspire thoughts of traveling to Maui, Baja, the Florida Keys and many other places. Chris Guibert worked as a mountain bike guide for over 10 years in the American West. He was the first person to guide a 75-day tour down the Continental Divide Route for Adventure Cycling. At age 30 he went back to school for photography and has been an adventure travel photographer for the last 15 years. His work has appeared in Bike, Mountain Flyer, Powder, Adventure Cyclist and Outside magazines. Join us for a special opening event on Friday, June 5th from 6:309 p.m. to hear about Chris’s stories and his work. International foods and drinks will be served by the lovely Amy Oesteich. Galerie Boheme

A new show opens on First Friday at the Galerie Boheme, featuring Clyde Mikkola paintings. Clyde is well known for his acrylic and watercolor paintings depicting the beauty of the Copper Country. The opening reception will be from 6:30 to 9:00PM. Show dates will be June 5th thru July 1st. New gallery hours for the summer will be Tuesday thru Saturday, 1-4 to p.m.

“Feeling Like Big Bucks, but I’m Only Loose Change” by Alyssa Rose Dupuis

Alyssa Rose Dupuis of Calumet, MI is a self-taught fine art artist. Her focus media are charcoal, photography, and acrylic paint, but she also experiments with spray paint, watercolor, and coffee. Since graduating a year ago with a BS in Film, she has been focusing on her art, with pieces residing in the US and Europe. Her work tends to be experimental in style and leans toward surrealism. Alyssa’s works will be on display at the Omphale during the month of June. Chef Mike Porter will have a new culinary lineup for First Friday and there will be live music.
