Here’s how to find polling place where you can vote

HANCOCK – In order to vote, one must, obviously, know where to vote, and there are a couple ways that information can be found, according to Karen Haischer.

Haischer, who is Hancock city clerk, said if a voter knows who his or her local clerk is – county, city, village or township – that person should be able to locate a polling place after the voter provides his or her name, age and address.

Some people who have come to her office for poll locations have been reluctant to give their addresses other than Hancock, but that’s not enough information.

“We have three precincts,” she said.

A person’s address determines where that person should vote, Haischer said.

Registering to vote can be done by clerks, or by other people who are temporarily employed during voting registration drives, Haischer said.

“People can be deputized to do that kind of work,” she said.

Information about polling places and registering to vote can be found at the Michigan secretary of state website at webapps.sos.state.mi.us/MVIC.

Haischer said it’s best to check the SOS website for polling places, because the workers at the local SOS office might not have that information.

For the Tuesday presidential primary, Haischer said about 32 percent of registered voters voted at each precinct, which she said was a very good turnout.

The deadline to register for the Aug. 2 state primary election is July 5, and the deadline to register for the Nov. 8 general election is Oct. 11.

Haischer said she thinks there will be a great deal of interest by voters for the Nov. 8 general election.

“I’m sure it’s going to be a big turnout,” she said.
