Lorenz seeks re-election as Houghton County clerk

HOUGHTON – Even going to the grocery store, Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly Lorenz gets questions – not just about things related to her jobs, but other county offices, such as the courts.

“I tell them what I can that’s just what you do as an elected official,” she said. “You help out as you can.”

She’s looking to continue that help. Lorenz, a Democrat, is running for re-election as clerk after being elected to a partial term in 2014.

She’s worked in the courthouse in various positions for almost 16 years. She started out with a short stint on probate/family court, before moving to Friend of the Court and 97th District Court.

“I was up there until nobody was running down here (for clerk),” she said. “I thought, ‘I’m young enough’ and gave it a shot.”

Having worked in several county positions already, Lorenz said, has made her better able to assist people coming through the door with where to go and what to do.

As clerk, Lorenz serves on many boards, including the County Board, Allocation Board, Canvassing Board and Redistricting Board. She also handles certificates for marriages, births and military discharge records, and handles concealed pistol license applications. In addition to managing the clerk’s office, she also serves as the register of deeds.

Lorenz, of Elo, has a husband, Dan, and a daughter, Megan. She also has family ties to county service. Her father, John Kelly, was county controller prior to Eric Forsberg, who is now county administrator.

Asked why she’s running for another term, Lorenz said it’s her love of work.

“People laugh because I enjoy working the way I do, but I like helping people,” she said. “I’ve helped a lot of people, and I’m going to continue to do so.”

Lorenz said people should vote for her because she is “hard-working, and I care about the people of Houghton County.”
