Township treasurer running for re-election

CALUMET TOWNSHIP – Debra Aubin was first elected Calumet Township treasurer in 1996, but she ran only because the person who was treasurer at the time retired.

I would never run against an incumbent,” she said.

Now, she’s the incumbent, and as of Thursday, she’s the only person to file to be on the Aug. 2 primary ballot.

Aubin said before running for township treasurer, she was treasurer for the village of Calumet from 1990 to 1996.

Although the township treasurer job involves much more work than the village treasurer, Aubin said she doesn’t mind.

“I love this job,” she said. “The main reason is because it’s a small town.”

Aubin, who lives in the village of Calumet, said all the members of the township board of trustees get along well, which means they are able to get things done without any heated disagreements.

Sometimes people come in to the township office to discuss some concern, Aubin said, but most of them don’t get too upset.

“Most people, if they have an issue it’s not with their taxes, it’s with the value (of their property),” she said. “I think we have very few people who come in and complain.”

Aubin said the job of township treasurer is one she’d like to continue doing.

“I look forward to coming to work every day,” she said.
