Yoop! Fest celebrates Midwest music
CALUMET — Bands and music lovers from the Keweenaw and throughout the Midwest congregated for two days of music at the Calumet Theatre for Yoop! Fest.
The festival is put on by Kitschy Spirit Records in Calumet. Now in its fourth year, the festival started at the Houghton skatepark “on a pallet stage we built ourselves,” Kitschy Spirit co-owner Chris Joutras said. The festival has grown and diversified, and is now in its biggest location yet.
“We just wanted a little more room,” he said. “It’s just a great venue that we’re hoping to utilize that’s there. It’s a great Keweenaw resource.”
Putting the lineup together took “months and months of e-mailing and preparation,” Joutras said.
“I’m just showing the variety of diverse bands, mixing the local scene with more regional bands,” he said.
Performances alternated between the ballroom and the main stage, the latter of which housed acts ranging from the plucked guitar and loops of Keweenaw singer Lena Maude to the Cleveland collective Mourning [A] BLKStar, which merged jazz, soul and rap beats.
Others, like Minneapolis band Pink Tower, brought a basement-show spirit to the upstairs ballroom.
“It’s like a cool place to come together, for Minneapolis and Milwaukee folks,” said Paige Collette, the band’s lead singer.
Drummer Tim Chandler agreed. Chandler was the “homecoming king” of the festival, playing in three other bands in addition to drumming for Pink Tower, said Paige Collette, the band’s lead singer. That includes the band Visual Learner, which was the next up on the ballroom stage.
“A lot of the Midwest punk friends come together for this,” Chandler said. “It’s really fun.”
Joutras serves as a connector. He’s “sort of a hero” to their Minneapolis circle, Colette said, and also knows many of the bands from when he lived in Madison. Chandler lived with Joutras in Madison, and also played in a band with him.
“Three of these guys played the fest last year, and I was here in the audience,” she said. “It was a great weekend, a super-fun time. I was so excited to get to play this time.”
They enjoyed their first Calumet show, praising the historic location.
“We’ve never been to this venue before, so this is really pretty,” Chandler said.
The wide-range lineup drew fans from larger markets. Alicia Jackson of Madison came up as part of her anniversary celebration.
Some of the bands she’s been able to see in Madison, though many of them she’d never heard of before the weekend. She appreciated the eclectic mix.
“We like it up here,” she said. “It’s pretty, and two days of music, a couple days out on the lake, seems like a pretty good way to end summer.”
