EAGLE HARBOR TOWNSHIP — One of Michigan’s most scenic drives is officially open for the season. Brockway Mountain Drive in Eagle Harbor Township is now open to vehicle traffic, welcoming visitors and locals to enjoy its iconic panoramic views of Lake Superior and the Keweenaw Peninsula.
During the winter, Brockway Mountain Drive is closed to cars as the Keweenaw County Road Commission does not plow the road; instead the drive is used as a snowmobile trail. The seasonal barriers have been removed, snow is cleared, and the nine-mile stretch of roadway is fully accessible.
Constructed during the Great Depression in the early 1930s, Brockway Mountain Drive has offered generations of travelers a chance to experience one of the Midwest’s most stunning landscapes. This road is one of the highest scenic roadways above sea level in the U.S. between the Rocky and Allegheny mountains. With multiple pull-offs, two major scenic viewing areas, and frequent appearances by hawks and eagles overhead, the drive continues to be a beloved destination for birdwatchers, photographers and nature lovers. It is estimated that 200 vehicles per day use the roadway on average
Visit Keweenaw encourages travelers to explore the drive now and throughout the warmer months. According to a Visit Keweenaw press release, “Whether you’re catching a sunrise, gazing at stars or soaking in the Keweenaw’s vast beauty – Brockway Mountain Drive is ready for another season of unforgettable views.”
